It's mid August and if you're planning on applying for R1 you're probably freaking out a bit, but don't worry, take a deep breath, we got this. You can still submit high-quality applications if you focus on what truly matters and prioritizing the programs that fit you. Here's a streamlined checklist to help you prioritize wisely and make every week count.

  1. Decide on your top 2-3 programs - At this stage, applying to 5+ schools for R1 isn’t realistic. Focus on 2–3 programs—ideally a mix of dream and realistic stretch options.

Pro Tip: Many “safety” or lower top-25 schools have later R1 deadlines in October, giving you time to work on those after the September crunch.

  2. Lock Down Your Recommenders—Now - Give your recommenders at least two weeks—ideally more. That means reaching out this week. Be clear about deadlines and send them supporting material (like a brag sheet or resume).

  3. Write down your short-term and long-term goal in a concise paragraph - This paragraph is the foundation for almost every part of your app—from essays to interviews. Write one strong, clear paragraph that lays out your short-term and long-term goals. Keep it realistic, focused, and relevant to business school.

  4. Outline your essays, ASAP - If you haven’t started writing yet, don’t panic. Begin with brainstorming and outlining. Aim to tackle one school per night. This builds momentum and makes drafting feel doable.

  5. Prioritize Resume Refresh + School Research - Spend one evening refreshing your resume in MBA format, then shift your focus to one school per night. Get to know their teaching style, culture, leadership focus, and career outcomes—it'll show in your essays.

  6. Consider Help (Coach, Peer Feedback, Online Resources) - At this point, structured support can be a game-changer. Whether that’s a coach (👋🏽), a trusted friend, or an MBA subreddit, accountability will help you stay focused and improve faster.

⚡ Bonus Tips (If You Can Handle More):

  • Borderline test scores? Consider a quick retake—many schools will accept updates post-submission.

  • Triage non-essential extras: Optional essays and scholarships can wait until your core materials are strong.
