Now that the July 4th festivities have completed—which in the U.S. is a sign that we've hit mid-summer—for those applying for MBA programs in 2025, it’s time to get your game on. Summer is a crucial but often underestimated season for MBA hopefuls. Whether you’re pushing for Round 1 or planning a more relaxed Round 2, this stretch—when almost all programs have released their essay prompts—can truly make or break your results.

Back in 2023, I wrote a MBA Summer Prep guide that laid out a month-by-month application timeline for success. While some parts of the MBA process have evolved since then, most of that advice still holds true.

But I also want to give you the freshest, most up-to-date perspective—so here’s a look at the key trends shaping the MBA application landscape for 2025, and how you can plan your prep accordingly.

🌎 Politics & MBAs: Flexibility, Resilience & Global Readiness Matter More Than Ever

Let’s start with the elephant in the room: how recent U.S. government actions are shaking up higher education. Between the administration’s challenge to Harvard and the sudden pause in visa interviews earlier this month, international students aiming for U.S. programs are facing more uncertainty. For all applicants, even American applicants looking at MBAs outside the U.S., this shift means increased competition across top schools in Europe, Canada, Australia, and Asia as more candidates weigh global options.

Honestly, none of us—not consultants, not AdComs—know exactly how or when these policies will change.

On top of that, the administration’s attacks on DEI initiatives have made some wonder if diversity is still a core value in MBA admissions. After speaking directly with AdCom at last month’s AIGAC conference, I can confidently say: yes, diversity remains a priority, and that includes a strong international intake.

More than ever, with the world in a turbulent place, programs are now especially focused on applicants who show an international mindset, can collaborate across differences (of background and thought), and who demonstrate resilience and adaptability. When you’re drafting essays, make sure to showcase moments when you’ve done exactly that. Schools are looking for people who can thrive in a messy, fast-changing world.

And for my international applicants interested in USA MBA programs: stay strong. Schools want you here and are working behind the scenes to offer support. I recommend applying in Round 1, which is slightly less competitive and gives you more time to navigate visa logistics. And as a precaution, avoid political posts—especially on U.S. politics—on your public social media for now.

✨ AI & Your MBA Application

In 2023, AI tools like ChatGPT were just starting to sneak into the MBA application process. Some of my clients even wanted to draft their essays using AI—which led me to write a full article last year why ChatGPT or AI isn't going to write you a successful essay. While

While AI and ChatGPT content generation has definitely improved since then, I still stand by what I wrote. Even for programs that accept AI-generated essays, AdCom feedback is clear: AI-generated essays sound “generic” and “flat.” Your unique voice and human insight are what make your story stand out.

With that being said, while AI content generation is still not ideal, it is great for brainstorming, organizing ideas, and reflecting; Use it to sharpen your outline while keeping your deliverables original.

Beyond just applications, AI’s impact on business itself is something MBA programs are actively addressing. Schools are actively accounting for AI's prominence by adding AI focused courses, new centers, and career pathways. AI’s impact isn’t just for those chasing tech or AI-specific careers—it touches nearly every industry now. Whichever industry you're heading into, showing that you understand how AI is shaping your field can make you stand out. Especially if AI is part of your post-MBA goals, make sure it's authentic—not like you’re just riding the hype wave.

💼 Job Market, Networking & Pre-MBA Prep

Back in 2023, the job market was solid: low employment and strong hiring. This year? The combination of AI disruption and economic cooling indicates that it's more mixed. Naturally, many applicants are concerned about job prospects post-graduation. An MBA from a top program remains one of the best investments you can make in your career—but the market has shifted. Schools now want proactive, resourceful applicants who have already made an impact and know how to leverage networks early—whether that’s through admissions events, current students, or alumni connections. Especially in a year as volatile as 2025, resilience, adaptability, and initiative are traits that stand out more than ever.
