Round 1 and Round 2 attract different types of applicants, so if you’re applying in Round 2, your approach should reflect that. Let’s break down what admissions is looking for:
Applicant Profiles by Round
Round 1: Typically draws highly prepared, well-rounded applicants with strong GMAT/GRE scores, academics, and experiences. Admissions expects top-tier qualifications. Scholarships also tend to be more generous in this round
Round 2: Still attracts high-caliber candidates, but the applicant pool is larger and more diverse. Admissions often uses this round to create a balanced, varied class. If waitlisted for Round 1, admissions will also reassess your application with R2 batch.
Implications for Your Strategy
Essays are more critical than ever: R2 is your chance to stand out. Strong scores and experience are expected, so your essays need to highlight what makes you distinctive—your story, impact, and unique perspective. This is where you go beyond numbers and quantitative achievements.
Refinement and clarity matter: Unlike R1, where enthusiasm can sometimes compensate for rough edges, R2 applications face more competition. Unclear messaging can be costly. Admissions expects thorough, clear storytelling, particularly around career goals, growth, and fit with the program. Note, while AI can polish essays, making sure that essays are "error proof", AdCom is ultimately trying to get to know you. No amount of cleaning up and fancy AI jargon can cover up lack of clarity and authenticity.
Show self-reflection and enthusiasm: Essays should convey thoughtful reflection on your past experiences and demonstrate genuine excitement for the MBA program and your future goals. The best way to do this is to make sure you understand the school in-depth by networking with students, alumni, and AdCom. Just like before, AI research—which notably isn't always accurate—just doesn't have the same effect.
